Houston Texans Sign Veteran Cornerback Phillip Gaines to the 53-Man Roster

Patrick D. Starr

The Houston Texans worked out cornerback Phillip Gaines on Tuesday. Now they have agreed to terms with the veteran cornerback. Gaines played his college football locally at Rice University.

Gaines and the Texans agreed to a one-year deal.

He was a third-round pick (87th overall) out of Rice University by the Chiefs. Gaines last played for the Kansas City Chiefs (2014-2017), the Buffalo Bills (2018), and the Cleveland Browns (2018).

Gaines appeared in 52 career games with 22 starts, and he posted 138 total tackles. He also has 16 career pass deflections and one interception.

The Texans will have to make a corresponding move on the 53-man roster to open a roster spot for Gaines.
