Bill O'Brien is Fortunate to have Romeo Crennel as the Houston Texans Defensive Coordinator

With the exit of former Texans defensive coordinator Mike Vrabel when he was named the head coach of the Tennessee Titans, head coach Bill O’Brien is bringing back Romeo Crennel as his defensive coordinator. Crennel spent the 2017 season as the Texans assistant head coach, helping both O’Brien and Vrabel during the week and on game days.
"Very knowledgeable,” O’Brien said of Crennel. Excellent history in this league. We could be here all day talking about Romeo, what I think about him, what the league thinks about him. It's really good that we have him on our staff."
Now Crennel will return to his role as defensive coordinator which he held for three seasons.
“You know how important Romeo is to me personally and then obviously the coaching resume speaks for itself,” O’Brien said of Crennel at the Senior Bowl. “Romeo is a great person. He is a guy that you can go in there and talk to, talk about all different kinds of things relative to coaching relative to off the field.”
Crennel’s contract expired after the 2016 season and the Texans retained him for 2017 as the assistant head coach. The Texans defense never finished lower 11th in points per game during Crennel's three seasons as defensive coordinator. During this span, the Texans defense finished #1 overall in yards given up per game in 2016.
“Players have a great deal of respect for him. He’s the same guy every day. He’s a really good person,” O’Brien continued. “I know the McNairs and myself, we feel very fortunate to have him on our staff.”
This will be a seamless move for the Texans, moving Crennel back to the head up the defense for the 2018 season. He was kept in the organization for this exact purpose - to be the fallback plan for the Texans coaching staff as other coaches moved on.
