The Houston Texans coming off of their first ever division title and playoff win, are faced what every team goes through after the season. They face decisions that will shape the roster for years to come, and in 2012 the Texans have some key free agents.
The fact is that General Manager Rick Smith probably has been fretting this day especially when it comes to former first round pick Mario Williams. Also, star running back Arian Foster is a restricted free agent, which gives the Texans a safety net if a long term deal can't be reached. (I suggest you read Alan Burge's article on Foster's Restricted definition in the the new CBA.) Starting center, Chris Myers also is probably a top 3 priority for the Texans considering he anchors one of the best offensive lines in the NFL.
Texans Owner Bob McNair has made it know that he want to bring back both Foster and Williams, and wants to give them deals to stay in Houston. This is good news for Texans fans that McNair wants to of his biggest stars back in Houston as the foundation for the franchise. Just be glad that you are not the one who has to restructure contracts and strike deals with all the Texans potential free agents.
The draft is still more than 3 months away and free agency doesn't officially open until March. The Texans front office can take away some headaches if they can reach some extensions before the opening of free agency.
Expect players like Bryant Johnson, Thomas Austin and Andrew Gardner to be let go, all three of these players were brought in for injury replacements. Also the Texans have signed 7 players to reserve/future contracts, Ra'Shon Harris,Juaquin Iglesias, Torri Williams, Javarris Williams, Cody Wallace, Trindon Holliday and Derrell Smith.
Listed are the priorities for the Texans by category. You can click on the linked names to see our thoughts on each player.
