'It Sucks!': Texans Coach DeMeco Ryans Opens Up About Brandin Cooks Cowboys Trade

While the trade of Brandin Cooks made sense for the Houston Texans, DeMeco Ryans was candid about how he felt.

When the Houston Texans traded veteran receiver Brandin Cooks to the Dallas Cowboys it felt like the inevitable conclusion to his tenure as a Texan.

Having requested a trade last season at the trade deadline, it was clear that Cooks didn't want to be on a team in the midst of a rebuild. So instead of ignoring that, the Texans did right by Cooks and traded him to a team that will compete for a Super Bowl this year.

Of course, the Texans and new coach DeMeco Ryans would have preferred to keep the veteran receiver with Ryans speaking about the loss of Cooks.

"It sucks losing a talented receiver like Brandin, so, we never wanted to lose talented players,” Ryans said. “We’re really trying to acquire as many talented players as possible, so, it’s hard losing him.”

Replacing a player of Cooks' caliber and consistency won't be an easy task, but the Texans could do so with the No. 12 pick in the draft. As for Cooks, even with his prior trade request Ryans hopes he succeeds in Dallas.

“I wish Brandin the best in Dallas,” said Ryans. “I know he’ll do well, but we have to move forward. Unfortunately, that’s part of the process, part of our business. You lose players at times.”

At the end of the day, the trade of Cooks was beneficial for all parties involved. Cooks goes to a Cowboys team vying for a Super Bowl, while the Texans got more draft capital to retool their roster in the upcoming draft.
