Texans Not Holding Back Preparing Tytus Howard and Max Scharping for 2019

The Houston Texans kicked off the soft opening of their preparation for the 2019 season with the start of rookie mini-camp. With precise needs heading into this season, the Texans doubled down on a troubled position group of offensive tackle. The Texans selected Tytus Howard in the first round and Max Scharping in the second, which showed the organization pushing to correct a clear need in the offensive line.
The coaching staff received their first extended look at the duo on Friday and both Howard and Scharping were placed in their own spots and were put to work. The two showed good athletic ability against their competition and most importantly looked honed in with what the offense was running. It was a solid first day on the field for the two rookie offensive tackles.
Head Coach Bill O’Brien gave a glimpse of his two rookie offensive tackles.
“Very good. Really a bright guy. Smart, good athlete,” O’Brien on Howard’s first day on the field. “Really did a nice job today coming out. We taught him a lot. We threw a lot of information at him and (Max) Scharping and all the guys and they did a nice job coming out here today and knowing what to do.”
O’Brien and the Texans offensive staff are not holding back on what they are teaching the two rookies. The Texans are pushing Howard and Scharping in meetings and on the field to get them ready when the veterans arrive for OTAs and prepared to compete for roles during training camp.
“We give them a lot of info,” O’Brien said of Howard and Scharping. “No, we definitely do. We try to make sure that they understand that there's a lot that they need to learn, both from a technical standpoint and then from an X's and O's standpoint. But I would say that the big thing for us is just to continue to improve, get used to the speed of the game, the strength of the game.”
There have been questions on where both Howard and Scharping fit up front in the offensive line. O’Brien cleared up on where they would start out for the Texans to get them ready for the season.
"I would say that both of those guys, Tytus Howard and – now, Tytus will play a lot of left tackle, play a lot of right tackle, but he can play guard, too,” O’Brien explained. “Scharping can do both, too. So, both guys are very smart guys. In the brief time that we've them, they’ve picked up a lot of what we're trying to do. Really sharp guys, good guys, and we're thrilled to have them. I mean, absolutely thrilled to have them."
The Texans are pushing the rookie duo to potentially be ready for the field for the 2019 regular season.
