Texans Notes Heading into OTAs
Patrick D. Starr
With the bulk of the excitement of the NFL off-season finished until training camp starts, the Houston Texans cranked up OTAs (Organized Team Activities) today at Reliant. Kept under wraps for the most part OTAs will get rookies acquainted with their new surroundings and get the veterans of the team back on a routine heading into the 2012 season.
There has been some news trickling in over the past weekend heading into the 2012 Texans OTA's.
- Starting quarterback Matt Schuab will be sitting out all team activities during this time, to let his injured foot get extra healing time. This will give T.J. Yates, John Beck and Case Keenum majority of the team reps during this time. There isn't reason for alarm for Schaub not getting this work in, just a precautionary measure for the season. Beck and Keenum will benefit the most from this time getting more snaps with their new team.
- Defensive tackle, Earl Mitchell has went from 287 lbs. to 308 lbs. during the off-season. Looking to add some more weight to his frame, Mitchell is looking to stay on this team any way possible. It is apparent the Texas are concerned about his ability to hold up against the run, hence the 21 lbs. weight game. Hopefully the added weight will not take away the quickness in Mitchell's game.
- Inside linebacker Derrell Smith will be making the position change to fullback for the Texans in 2012. Smith was signed by the Texans last season to the practice squad and has been with the Texans since that time. At 6-2 232 lbs. Smith will be competing for the open fullback position left by Lawrence Vickers, who was cut by the Texans and quickly signed by the Dallas Cowboys. James Casey is considered the starting fullback, but he seems to be penciled in as the "Tiger" in the Texans two tight end sets opposite of Owen Daniels according to Head Coach Gary Kubiak. Rookie running back from Illinois, Jason Ford will also be competing at the fullback position during camp. He too added weight after his college playing days and jumped from 235 lbs. to 251 lbs. heading into OTAs on Monday.
- On Monday the Texans announced the signing of draft picks Ben Jones, Keshawn Martin, Jared Crick, Nick Mondek, Randy Bullock and 21 undrafted free agents. With that it only leaves the Texans top three draft picks in Whitney Mercilus, DeVier Posey and Brandon Brooks as the only unsigned players heading into the 2012 season.
