Patriots 33, Redskins 7: Full Game Summary, Highlights

Washington will give Colt McCoy his first start, against the best defense in the NFL.

Second Half Updates

Third Quarter

Washington locked up the New England running game in the first half, only allowing 19 yards. The Patriots came out of the tunnel gunning though, taking the opening possession all the way downfield for an easy score. The drive was all passes and runs to halfbacks, including a 29-yard pass down the right sideline to Brandon Bolden for the score.

In the blink of an eye, the score has moved.

Patriots lead 19-7.

Washington was able to drive to midfield, but an overthrow on third down leads to another punt. This one could be about to go sideways quickly if the Patriots can mount another scoring drive.

Sony Michel is on fire. After a big 25-yard run down the right sideline, a pass to Julian Edelman set the Patriots up inside the 20. Michel got the ball and raced through the defense for a 14-yard score. The Washington defense which was brilliant in the first half are now being exposed as they had been in the first four games.

Just like that, New England leads 26-7 and the rout is on.

After another Washington punt, head coach Jay Gruden feels his employment slipping away from him.

The Patriots were looking to turn the lights out, however defensive tackle Daron Payne, who was questionable to return with a knee injury, knifed in on third down and took Brady down for the Redskins fourth sack of the game.

With the fourth quarter quickly approaching, this may be Washington's last chance to make it a game.

The third quarter comes to an end with yet another sack of McCoy by the Patriots.

Fourth Quarter

Washington wasn't able to do much of anything and gave the ball back to New England where Brady was able to strike again. The defense, on the field for far too long, was worn out, and eventually let TE Ryan Izzo alone wide open in the end zone for another easy score.

The Patriots moved ahead 33-7.

INJURY UPDATE: Left tackle Donald Penn appears to have hurt his leg on another sack of McCoy.

INJURY UPDATE: QB Colt McCoy was evaluated for a concussion after that same play, but was back in the game on the next Washington possession.

And that's a wrap, a few garbage time yards and Washington runs out the clock. They drop to 0-5 on the season, Patriots 5-0. 33-7 is the final.

The Washington Redskins are going to try their hardest, in front of a hostile crowd at FedEx Field. While many Washington fans have abandoned the organization for lack of direction, caring and overall ability to construct a winner, the games must go on.

We'll be keeping a live blog here of all of the action, for the remote chance that the Redskins can pull off the upset of the century and take down the New England Patriots.

Inactives List

Pre Game

First Quarter

The Redskins win the toss and have taken the opening possession, trying to get Colt McCoy in a rhythm before the defense gets out there. Touchback.

This one is strange, the Patriots called a timeout before the first snap.

McCoy's first pass of the 2019 season is a play-action fake and a completion to the left to Terry McLaurin. The dynamic rookie is back after missing Week 4. First down, Washington.

After a couple of failed handoffs put Washington in third-and-long, and McCoy is sacked by Chase Winovich. Drive over, punt.

On the Patriots first drive, Ryan Kerrigan misses a tackle for no gain of Sony Michel, and Michel ends up going for a first down. Can't have that.

Rookie Montez Sweat almost got a sack on Brady who ducked under and got rid of the ball, incomplete. Brady completes a 3rd and 6 pass to James White for a new set of downs.

Two opportunities missed for the Washington defense.

Finally! On third down, Washington gets good coverage and Matt Ioannidis and Kerrigan combine to sack Brady. Washington defense gets off the field. Washington will start at their 32 after the punt.

WOW! Steven Sims takes the end around, breaks a tackle and scoots down the right sideline for a 65-yard touchdown!

Redskins lead 7-0, it's the first time the New England Patriots have trailed in 2019.

Derrius Guice is at home, celebrating.

INJURY UPDATE: Patriots WR Phillip Dorsett (hamstring) is questionable to return

The Patriots are trying to answer quickly, getting their tight ends involved to move quickly down the field. Three straight completions of over 15 yards got them inside the 10, and then Brady finds Julian Edelman across the middle for the tying score.

Mike Nugent, replacing Stephen Gotskowski after the long-time kicker went on IR, misses the extra point.

Redskins lead 7-6.

McCoy is sacked for the second time in the quarter, loss of seven on a take down from Danny Shelton after a Van Noy pressure flushed him.

It kills the drive, two incompletions and here comes Tress Way for the second time today.

Jonathan Allen gets the sack of Brady on first down, just whipped the Pats left tackle.

Unlike McCoy however, Brady is capable of digging out an early hole. He finds Josh Gordon downfield, who puts on a mean stiff arm and gains 22 yards for a first down.

A big completion to Julian Edelman follows and New England is already back in field position.

An offensive pass interference on TE Ryan Izzo helps the Redskins out, but a third-down completion to Josh Gordon right at the sticks brings out the measurement. It's a first down, barely. Gruden may challenge.

He does challenge... hard to tell where the ball got to before he went to the ground based on initial replays.

Washington wins the challenge, fourth and one.

Patriots going for it, direct snap to James White and he's stuffed! Rookie LB Cole Holcomb stuffs him and Landon Collins cleans up the tackle. Washington ball!

After two Adrian Peterson runs get Washington to 3rd and 2, McCoy passes out of shotgun and finds Trey Quinn underneath across the middle to move the chains.

McCoy gets pressured and escapes out the pocket and shoots down the right sideline for a gain of 9 yards. That ends the first quarter.

First Quarter Stats

Colt McCoy: 2/4, 16 yards, Passer Rating 60.4
Adrian Peterson: 4 carries, 12 yards
Steven Sims, Jr: 1 carry, 65 yards, TD
Landon Collins: 4 tackles, 1 TFL
Jonathan Allen: Sack
Ioaniddis/Kerrigan: 1/2 sack

Second Quarter

After a run stuff and on 3rd and 2, a play-fake from under center brings Donta Hightower lose when McCoy rolls out and he goes down with the Pats 3rd sack of the half. Way boots it into the end zone for a touchback.

After a Patriots first down, Allen is able to stop a screen play from developing, tackles White for just a two-yard gain. Brady has all the time in the world and lets it go deep, but it's underthrown and Montae Nicholson breaks it up.

Flag on the play... unbelievable they called a DPI. Nicholson turned and looked for the ball and there was a body bump. Should not have been called.

Sets Patriots up at the Washington 27... and Gruden is challenging the DPI call.

The DPI stands, it should've never have been called. A Kerrigan pass breakup brings up a 3rd-and-10 pass short of the sticks, bringing on Nugent for his first field goal attempt of 2019.

Nugent hits the 37-yarder and gives New England their first lead, 9-7.

Ensuing possession looks like the Washington offense we're used to. McCoy fumbled the ball out of bounds without being hit, and Washington punts it away.

Edelman with some beautiful toe-drag swag on a sideline catch for 12 yards.

Next play, Tim Settle crashes the New England offensive line and gets the third sack of the game off a beautiful bull rush through Marcus Cannon. Loss of 12.

A completion to Edelman, but the Redskins defense swarms and keeps him from getting the first down. The ball is in Washington territory and after first showing they were going for it, the punt unit comes on for the Pats. A false start will back them up five yards but they should hardly care, actually gives them more room to avoid the touchback.

Fair catch by Trey Quinn at the Washington 12.

McCoy finds Quinn over the middle and when he turned it upfield he had the ball punched out by Jonathan Jones. New England recovers and they're in prime position to stretch out their lead.

Brady under pressure and lofts it up, it's picked by Montae Nicholson at the goal line!

INJURY UPDATE: DT Daron Payne (knee) questionable to return.

Adrian Peterson fights off a safety to get some breathing room from the one-yard line, and then McCoy finds Terry McLaurin wide open on the left sideline for the big gain and a new set of downs.

And now, the weekly Washington penalty fest has begun. A false start before the McLaurin catch, now a holding penalty followed by another false start pushes Washington back to 1st and 25 from their own five-yard line.

It was their 43rd penalty.

McCoy completes to Chris Thompson, and there's another holding penalty on Washington. It was called on Wes Martin and it absolutely was not a hold. The refs strike again, but the Patriots declined it.

Washington punted after the two minute warning.

The Redskins defense continued their strong first half, keeping the Patriots from advancing the ball and actually forcing a punt with over 1 minute remaining in the half.

The defense giveth, the offense taketh away. On first down, McCoy throws an unbelievable short-pass interception right to Jason McCourty. Sims stopped the route coming across the middle.

Amazingly, the Washington defense keeps the Patriots out of the end zone with quality coverage and then good pressure as well on third down. Nugent hits the 23-yarder and gives New England a 12-7 lead.
