The Washington Redskins are saddled with a slew of injuries, but will try to pull it together in time to pull off what would be one of the bigger upsets in the NFL this 2019 season on Sunday afternoon. Bill Callahan's troops will try to make him 2-0 when they host the undefeated Kyle Shanahan and the San Francisco 49ers. Shanahan of course was the former offensive coordinator of the Redskins, who was part and parcel to the destruction of Robert Griffin's career earlier in the decade.
He's done well for himself since he and father Mike were run out of town, first landing as the OC in Atlanta for their Super Bowl run, then moving to the big chair out west.
Firing the Shanahan's was one of the wiser moves under owner Dan Snyder, though the organization didn't reap many benefits from the ensuing Jay Gruden era, which is why it finds itself in the Callahan interim era now. The game will not be a referendum on the decision to let Shanahan out the building, though it must be hard for Washington fans to see the success of he, Rams head coach Sean McVay and now Green Bay Packers head man Matt LaFleur, all assistants under Mike Shanahan.
Current OC Kevin O'Connell is seen as a sharp mind who will one day get his chance to run his own shop as well, and fans probably cannot help but wonder if Washington cleans house this offseason whether or not they'll be throwing out another future head coach as well. O'Connell is now finally calling plays, and will have the next 10 weeks to dazzle, starting with the formidable task of scoring against the strong 49ers defense.
