Coyotes' goalie Mike Smith scores a goal against the Red Wings
With the clock ticking down, Smith gloved his 29th save of the night, dropped it in front of him, and quickly flipped it the length of the ice, towards the empty Detroit net. His aim was true, and the goal counted, the first of his career at 19:59 of the third period to give the Coyotes a 5-2 win.
Smith is the 11th goalie to score a goal in an NHL game (it's happened 14 times), and just the sixth netminder to get one stemming from an actual shot - Ron Hextall (who accomplished the feat twice), Chris Osgood, Martin Brodeur, Jose Theodore, and Evgeni Nabokov preceded Smith's lamp-lighter with Nabokov's 2002 tally being the most recent.
Brodeur is the NHL's all-time goalie goals leader with three to his credit, while Grant Fuhr holds the single-season points record with 14 in 1983-84 (all assists). Tom Barasso is the all-time leading point scorer among goalies, tallying 48 helpers over his career.
