The Philadelphia Phillies will sign slugger Pat Burrell to a one-day minor league contract to allow him to retire with the team, according to MLB Trade Rumors.

Burrell had been battling a chronic foot injury and was not optimistic about playing in 2012 when interviewed by the Associated Press in November.

“I have not decided yet, but I don’t think I can play anymore [due to a chronic foot injury].  It hurts me to say that.”
