KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia (AP) Defending Olympic champion Lydia Lassila of Australia advanced to the finals of women's aerials Friday, where she'll be joined by the 2010 silver medalist, Li Nina of China.

Lassila and Li were among the three women from their respective countries to make the 12-woman final in an event that usually shapes up as a showdown between Australia and China. The top six ranked women are from those countries.

Also a factor: the United States. Ashley Caldwell of Hamilton, Va., was the top qualifier with 101.25 points. Emily Cook of Park City, Utah, now competing in her third Olympics, also made it through.

Lassila landed a four-twist jump during training and, in the final, could try to become the first woman to land it in competition.
