IIHF: Dropping women's hockey 'will never happen'

SOCHI, Russia (AP) The head of ice hockey's international governing body says there is no danger of the women's event being dropped from the Olympics.

IIHF President Rene Fasel says, ''I can guarantee that will never happen.''

Women's hockey has faced criticism because it is dominated by the United States and Canada. The two North American countries will meet in the final on Thursday for the fourth time in five Olympics since the sport was added to the program. They have also met in every world championship final since 1990.

Ex-IOC President Jacques Rogge said after the 2010 Winter Games that the sport must improve if it is to continue. But an IOC spokesman last week said Rogge hadn't meant to put the sport on notice.
