Japanese Nordic combined jumper, Tako, injured

KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia (AP) Taihei Kato of Japan was taken off the ski jump landing area by stretcher on Tuesday after crashing during the Nordic combined large hill competition.

In steady rain, Kato landed awkwardly, lost his left ski and then fell hard on to his left elbow. He was conscious and appeared to be in pain as he was helped away by medical officials.

It was not immediately known if he would be able to continue in the competition and complete the 10-kilometer cross-country portion of the event later Tuesday.
