Sweden goes for gold without Nicklas Backstrom

SOCHI, Russia (AP) Sweden is even more short-handed in the Olympic hockey gold-medal game.

Nicklas Backstrom wasn't in uniform when the Swedes played Canada on Sunday. They dressed an extra defenseman, Henrik Tallinder, to take his place against the Canadians.

It was not announced why the standout forward didn't play. He was listed on the lineups handed out before the game.

Sweden started the tournament with forward Henrik Zetterberg and lost its captain after one game because of a herniated disk.

The Swedes didn't put Henrik Sedin or Johan Franzen on their final roster because both forwards, who would have been on one of their top lines, are hurt. Sedin has a rib injury and Franzen has had a concussion.
