AOC throws support behind Brisbane and area 2028 Olympic bid

SYDNEY (AP) The Australian Olympic Committee says it will support a possible Queensland bid to host the 2028 Olympic Games.

A group of mayors from the southeast of Queensland state have begun a study to decide whether Brisbane and nearby towns and cities should bid for the Games. On Friday, AOC president John Coates committed to support the study.

Coates said in a letter to the regional mayors ''we look forward to working with you on this project of national and international significance.''

The city doesn't have to formally register its hosting interest, which needs AOC endorsement, until January 2019.

The AOC said earlier that with Melbourne and Sydney hosting previous Olympics in 1956 and 2000, respectively, it was the turn of Australia's third biggest city to host the Summer Games.
