McNay, Hughes earn spot on Olympic sailing team in 470 class

PALMA DE MALLORCA, Spain (AP) Stu McNay of Providence, Rhode Island, and Dave Hughes of Miami have earned a berth on the U.S. Olympic sailing team in the 470 class.

This will be the third career Olympic appearance for McNay and the first for Hughes as a competitor. Hughes was a coach for Team USA at the London Olympics.

The veterans have sailed together since late 2012, although their experience in Olympic-class sailing stretches back more than a decade. In just more than three years, McNay and Hughes have compiled an impressive list of podium finishes at many of the world's toughest dinghy regattas, and are widely seen as medal contenders in Rio.

The United States failed to medal in sailing in London.
