Overpass collapses in World Cup host city, at least two dead

Thursday July 3rd, 2014

At least two people are dead and another 10 injured after an overpass in Brazilian World Cup host city Belo Horizonte collapsed, reports Reuters

More from Reuters:

Television images showed part of a passenger bus crushed under the overpass and news website G1 said another two trucks and a vehicle were also smashed.

The accident site is around 3 km (2 miles) from the Mineirao stadium, where a World Cup semi-final match will be held next Tuesday.

BBC's Dan Roan tweeted a photo of the collapse site.

Belo Horizonte is scheduled to host the World Cup's semi-final game between the winners of Brazil-Colombia and Germany-France on July 8. According to Reuters, the overpass was "one of the many infrastructure projects aimed at improving the city's ailing public transport network," and was considered a legacy project from the World Cup. Construction on the overpass had not yet been fully completed.
