Pele's son Edinho arrested in Brazil over money laundering

Wednesday July 9th, 2014

Edinho, son of Brazilian soccer legend Pele, was arrested in his home in Santos on Tuesday in an effort to prevent him from fleeing the country, reports BBC News.

In May, Edinho -- whose full name is Edson Cholbi Nascimento -- was sentenced to 33 years in prison for laundering money raised from drug trafficking, but was allowed to remain free during his appeal process. When authorities requested he hand over his passport and Edinho didn't comply, they arrested him.

The 43-year-old Edinho said he lost his passport, and his lawyer said the passport was canceled, making the arrest an "unnecessary" surprise.
