FIFA bans former Greece coach Fernando Santos for eight matches

Monday August 4th, 2014

Fernando Santos, who coached Greece during the 2014 World Cup, has been banned for eight international matches by FIFA for verbally abusing match officials at the competition, according to the Associated Press

During Greece's second-round penalty shootout loss to Costa Rica, Santos was ejected from the dugout. In a statement released Monday, FIFA said Santos displayed "several acts of unsporting conduct toward the match officials."

Santos' contract with Greece expired after the World Cup. His ban would take effect with the next national team that he coaches, in official competitive matches only.

Santos, 59, can appeal the ban if he chooses.
