Hungary fires coach Attila Pinter after loss to Northern Ireland

Thursday September 18th, 2014

The Hungarian football federation fired coach Attila Pinter after just eight months on the job following a loss to Northern Ireland in the team's first qualifying match for the 2016 European Championship, the federation announced Thursday.

Federation president Sandor Csanyi said former Hungary midfielder Pal Dardai will take over as interim coach for the rest of the year.

Hungary is ranked 54th in the world after Sunday's 2-1 loss to Northern Ireland. The Hungarian national team has not qualified for a major international tournament since the 1986 World Cup.
