BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Luis Suarez's home debut with Barcelona was spoiled by Celta Vigo as Joaquin Larrivey scored in the second half to deal the hosts a 1-0 loss that let Real Madrid take the overnight lead of the Spanish league on Saturday.
Barcelona's second consecutive loss and first at home in the league since February came after Neymar and Lionel Messi each hit the woodwork twice.
Cristiano Ronaldo's Madrid and defending champion Atletico Madrid had no such problems with finishing their scoring chances as they both rose above the slumping Catalan club.
Ronaldo put Madrid at the top of the standings, two points ahead of Barcelona, by scoring for a 12 straight game before setting up a second goal in a commanding 4-0 win at Granada.
Atletico climbed into second place, one point behind Madrid, after Antoine Griezmann scored his first two goals in league play this season to fuel a 4-2 win over visitors Cordoba.
Sevilla is two points behind Madrid before visiting Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.
Celta Vigo won at the Camp Nou for the first time in 73 years, and did so against its former coach Luis Enrique, who led the club to take over Barcelona after last season. Under his replacement, Eduardo Berizzo, sixth-place Celta has just one loss through 10 rounds.
"We played a bad game," said Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano. "We weren't comfortable at any point. Beyond creating chances, we weren't able to play our game. It's worrying."
Suarez returned to Camp Nou following his debut from a four-month biting ban last week at the Santiago Bernabeu.
But again he was limited to promising flashes, while Messi was frustrated in his attempt to get the elusive goal he needs to match the league's all-time scoring record.
Neymar curled the ball off the crossbar in the 11th minute and again hit the bar from close range in the 47th after a cross from Jordi Alba.
Messi was stopped by goalkeeper Sergio Alvarez in the 30th before defender Jonathan Castro slid to knock another of his shots off the goal frame.
Larrivey netted the 55th-minute winner by slotting home an audacious back-heeled pass from Manuel "Nolito" Agudo. It was the striker's seventh goal of the season, equaling Messi's mark.
Celta clung to the lead as Messi sent his free kick off the corner of the frame in the 80th before Alvarez made a one-handed save to deny Suarez in the 84th.
"It was a game the entire team had dreamed of," Alvarez said.
Earlier in Granada, Colombia forward James Rodriguez had his best game since joining Madrid this summer with a pair of goals, while Karim Benzema also scored from Ronaldo's pass after setting up the Portugal star's second-minute opener.
Madrid will take its 11-game winning run back home to host Liverpool in the Champions League on Tuesday. It has outscored opponents 46-7 during that streak.
Ronaldo also kept up his personal streak with his league-leading 17th goal and his 22nd overall this campaign.
"Talking about Cristiano is starting to be a little difficult. He is fantastic," Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said.
Ronaldo's sharp right-footed strike to slot in Benzema's pass after Dani Carvajal, who later left with a leg injury, had won possession near the end-line put the visitors in control from the second minute.
Rodriguez made it 2-0 in the 31st with an exquisite touch of his left boot to send the ball dipping over goalkeeper Roberto Fernandez after being set up by Benzema.
Benzema stabbed in his goal in the 54th from a back-heeled pass Ronaldo made with a defender draped on his back, and Rodriguez tapped in his second goal with three minutes to go.
Atletico also had little trouble in making sure Cordoba remained the only winless team in the league, and extended its home unbeaten streak in the competition to 25 games.
Griezmann got his first goal when his deflected shot went in from a corner two minutes before halftime.
Nabil Ghilas headed in his first of two goals to level in the 53rd, but Griezmann restored Atletico's lead five minutes later with a crisp header to turn in Juanfran Torres' cross at the near post. Mario Mandzukic and Raul Garcia sealed the win with headers in the 62nd and 80th before Ghilas got his second with three to play.
Malaga visited Real Sociedad later.
