Tim Cahill scores, but Australia falls to Japan in Asian Cup tune-up

OSAKA, Japan (AP) — Yasuyuki Konno and Shinji Okazaki scored second-half goals Tuesday to give Japan a 2-1 win over Australia in an Asian Cup warm-up match.

Konno headed in at the far post in the 61st minute after the Australia defense had failed to deal with Keisuke Honda's corner from the right. Okazaki scored the second with a flick from Masato Morishige's pass seven minutes later. It was the FSV Mainz striker's 40th goal for his country.

The New York Red Bulls' Tim Cahill scored a late header for the Australians.

Japan, the defending Asian Cup champion who routed Honduras 6-0 last week, is improving at the right time with the Asian Cup in January in Australia.

"They've got big players from the big leagues in Europe and of course they'll be a major threat in January," Cahill said. "But we acquitted ourselves well tonight and we're in a period of transition. We're now focused on getting it right for the start of the Asian Cup."

Cahill's Red Bulls open the MLS Eastern Conference finals against the New England Revolution at Red Bull Arena on Sunday.
