Liga MX: Chivas secures vital win over Pumas in battling relegation
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Relegation-threatened Chivas secured a vital 2-1 win over Pumas on Sunday, while defending champion America suffered an upset 1-0 loss to Tijuana in the second rounds of Mexico's first division.
Marco Fabian put Chivas ahead with a 40-yard strike in the 18th and Angel Reyna doubled the lead with a volley from close range four minutes before half time.
Eduardo Herrera netted a penalty for Pumas in the 84th, but it came too late to be anything more than a consolation.
Tijuana's Dayro Moreno scored a powerful strike in the 43rd after teammate Gabriel Hauche's header put him one-on-one with America goalkeeper Moises Munoz.
In other weekend matches, Queretaro beat Leones Negros 1-0, Veracruz won 3-1 against Puebla, Santos Laguna lost 1-0 to Cruz Azul, Monterrey overcame Pachuca 1-0, Tigres defeated Leon 1-0, Atlas secured a 2-1 victory over Morelia and Toluca thrashed Chiapas 3-0. American Herculez Gomez scored Puebla's goal in a losing effort.
Like most Latin American countries, Mexico divides its season into two parts, crowning champions for the first and second halves of the season. This is the league stage of the Clausura title.
