Sunderland midfielder Adam Johnson suspended following arrest

Sunderland has suspended midfielder Adam Johnson after the 27-year-old was arrested on suspicion of sexual activity with a girl under the age of 16, according to the BBC.  

The club said Johnson has been suspended "pending the outcome of the police investigation." According to BBC, the girl in question is 15 years old.

Later Monday, police told BBC that Johnson was released on bail.

Johnson has been a member of the England men's national team since 2010, playing in 12 games. He has played at Sunderland since 2012, making 88 appearances for the club. He previously played for Middlesbrough and Manchester City.

In 24 games across all competition for Sunderland this season, Johnson has five goals. 

Sunderland plays at Hull City on Tuesday.
