The Columbus Crew has picked up a fourth-year option on the contract of head coach Gregg Berhalter, extending him through the 2017 season, the team announced on Friday.
Berhalter has been the coach and sporting director of the Crew since November 2013.
Columbus went 14-10-10 last season under Berhalter, finishing third in the Eastern Conference. The team qualified for the MLS Cup playoffs for the first time since 2011.
"Gregg is the ideal sporting director and head coach for Crew SC as we build a winning culture and solid foundation both on and off the pitch," said Crew SC chairman Anthony Precourt. "There are no quick fixes in this business and Gregg has proven to be thoughtful and thorough in his intelligent approach to the game. With Gregg in charge, we feel that we are in position to compete and win on a year-in, year-out basis."
As a player, Berhalter spent 15 years in Europe before returning to the United States to play for the LA Galaxy. He retired after the 2011 season.
Berhalter was a member of the U.S. men's national team from 1994 to 2006.
