Swansea tightens hold on eighth place with win over Stoke City

SWANSEA, Wales (AP) — Swansea tightened its hold on eighth place in the English Premier League by beating visiting Stoke 2-0 on Saturday.

Swansea's second straight league win widened the gap to six points on ninth place. The Welsh side was set for its highest ever finish in the league, with three games left.

Stoke dropped from ninth to 10th, and showed little on attack. It also was reduced to 10 men for the first time this season when Marc Wilson tripped winger Jefferson Montero five minutes from the end and was issued a second yellow card.

After a dull first half, Montero broke the deadlock in the 76th minute with a diving header, and midfielder Jonjo Shelvey also set up the second for replacement Ki Sung-yeung in injury time.
