FIFA has suspended Nigeria defender Ugo Njoku for three games and fined her an undisclosed amount for elbowing Australia forward Samantha Kerr during a Group D match on Friday.

Kerr was elbowed in the face by Njoku in the 76th minute of Australia’s 2-0 victory. Njoku will miss Nigeria’s final group-stage match against the United States on Tuesday in Vancouver.

Kerr did not suffer any major injuries because of the elbow and should be able to play in Australia’s final group-stage match against Sweden on Wednesday.

If Nigeria fails to advance of the group stage, Njoku will serve her suspension over the country’s next two official matches.

Nigeria’s opening match was played to a 3-3 draw with Sweden and the team heads into Tuesday’s match in last place in Group D.

The United States is tops in the group and can wrap up a spot in the knockout stage with a win or draw against Nigeria.
