Sterling scores first EPL goal for Manchester City in win over Watford
MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Raheem Sterling scored his first Premier League goal for Manchester City as Manuel Pellegrini's team beat Watford 2-0 Saturday to keep its perfect record.
Sterling scored from six yards with a shot into the bottom right corner off a cross from Bacary Sagna in the 47th minute.
Fernandinho added a second goal less than 10 minutes later at Etihad Stadium with a firm strike after an assist from David Silva.
City won its 10th straight league match to set a club record. It leads the league with 12 points from four games this season, having scored 10 goals and conceded none.
The hosts had to wait until the second half to break promoted Watford's resilience, but once Sterling had scored the result never seemed in doubt.
Sterling was impressive from the start but City was unable to break through Watford's defense in the first half. Pellegrini made a change at the interval with Samir Nasri replacing the ineffective Jesus Navas.
The breakthrough came just two minutes after the restart as Watford lost possession outside the area and Sagna whipped in a superb cross. Sterling timed his run perfectly and turned the ball in unmarked.
The game began to open up and a second goal followed from a free kick nine minutes later. Yaya Toure's set piece was blocked by the wall but Fernandinho followed up, heading forward for Silva and then rifling home after taking a return pass.
Watford was a beaten side and could not get back into the game. Sterling left the field to a good ovation when he was substituted in the final minute.
