Real Madrid could be thrown out of Copa del Rey for using ineligible player

Wednesday December 2nd, 2015

Real Madrid could be eliminated from the Copa del Rey, Spain’s domestic cup competition, because the club fielded an ineligible player during Wednesday’s game against Cadiz. Real Madrid won the match 3–1.

Denis Cheryshev started the game for Real Madrid and scored in the third minute. He was ineligible to play in the match, however, because he accumulated three yellow cards in five Copa del Rey matches while on loan at Villarreal last season. Osasuna was ousted from the competition in September for committing the same infraction.

The home fans taunted Madrid manager Rafa Benitez during the match, according to the Daily Mirror, chanting, “Benitez look at Twitter, we're going to win this game because Cheryshev can't play!”

Real Madrid was eliminated in the round of 16 by Atletico Madrid in last year’s tournament after winning the 2014 cup.
