Montreal Impact rookie Michael Salazar has been given time off after being targeted in an extortion attempt, reports The Canadian Press.

La Presse reported that in March, a woman sent an email to the Impact containing file of a purported sex tape featuring Salazar. The Montreal police, as well as Facebook, were called in to help identify the blackmailers, according to the report.

La Presse says the act of “sextortion” is a growing practice in Quebec.

“I'm really sorry this happened and for any inconvenience this may have caused,” Salazar said in a statement. “I now realize the dangers of social networks and the Internet. There are criminals who do not hesitate to use the web to do harm, and I am a victim of that.”

Salazar has been given a few days to sort out the situation.
