Dinamo Bucharest’s Patrick Ekeng dies after on-field collapse
Dinamo Bucharest Patrick Ekeng of Cameroon died in the hospital after collapsing on the field in the 70th minute of a league match against Viitorul Constanta.
The 26-year-old played for just seven minutes after entering the game as a second-half substitution. He fell to the floor and was tended to by the team's medical staff before being rushed to the hospital where he died.
The team and doctors did not make his cause of death immediately known but local media is reporting that he suffered a heart attack.
Ekeng joined Dinamo Bucarest in January and had played in just seven games. He was previously a member of Le Mans, Lausanne and Córdoba.
Catalin Hildan was the Bucharest captain in October 2000 when he collapsed and died during a friendly. Cameroon midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe died after collapsing during a Confederations Cup match against Colombia in France in 2003.
