Lionel Messi told reporters that he is done playing for Argentina’s national team after Chile prevailed 4–2 in a penalty shootout after a 0–0 draw of the Copa America final. Newspapers around the world reacted with front pages dedicated to the star’s surprising comments.

Messi missed his penalty kick in the shootout loss to Chile, and Argentina fell to a defeat in a final for a third straight summer after the 2014 World Cup and 2015 Copa America. The finals loss was the fourth of Messi’s Argentina career.

If indeed Messi, 29, is done, he retires as his nation’s all-time leading scorer, setting the new standard against the USA with his 55th career international goal.
