Lionel Messi has injured his left hamstring after FC Barcelona's 1–0 victory over Athletic Bilbao, the club announced.

“[Messi's] presence in his country's World Cup qualifying matches will depend on how the injury develops,” Barcelona said in a statement.

Messi is on his way to Argentina to join the national team as they prepare to host a World Cup qualifying match against Uruguay on Friday and then travel to Venezuela for a game on Sept. 7.

Argentina's national team already suffered a blow when Sergio Aguero withdrew from the team due to an injury in Manchester United's game against West Ham United.

Copa core returns for World Cup qualifiers

Messi initially retired from the national team after missing a penalty in the shootout loss to Chile in the Copa America Centenario final, but was later convinced to rejoin the team by new coach Edgardo Bauza.

Argentina sits in third in the CONMEBOL qualification group.
