Red Sox Open Interviews for Manager with Sveum, Mackanin

The Boston Red Sox have set their first two interviews with Philadelphia Phillies bench coach Pete Mackanin and Milwaukee Brewers hitting coach Dale Sveum, according to an MLB.com report. Mackanin will be brought into Fenway park Monday to begin the interview process, with Sveum coming later in the week.

Both men have been interim managers in the past, and Sveum was the Red Sox's third base coach in 2004-05. Mackanin acted as a manager in Pittsburgh after Lloyd McClendon was fired in 2005, and in Cincinnati after Jerry Narron was let go in 2007.

Sveum has experience in Boston, and with that, relationship with a few of the players, including team captain Jason Varitek. He was named Baseball America's Top Managerial Prospect in 2003.

There is no timetable for when a hire could be made, and it is believed that Boston will bring in at least one more candidate.
