Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler will undergo surgery on the thumb which he broke during this weekend’s 31-20 victory over the San Diego Chargers, according to ESPN Chicago. A date has not yet been set for when the surgery will take place.

Cutler injured his thumb on a tackle attempt after throwing an interception to Antoine Carson in the fourth quarter of yesterday’s game. The 28-year-old was able to finish the contest against the Chargers, however, it is not known whether he will be able to return at all this season.

Caleb Hanie is slotted to fill in as quarterback for the Bears. The 26-year-old has just 14 regular season passing attempts in his four-year career, however, he has not attempted any passes this season. Last postseason, when Cutler was knocked out of the NFC title game for the Bears, Haine filled in and threw for 153 yards and a touchdown in their eventual loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Through 10 games this season, Cutler had thrown for 2,319 yards, 13 touchdowns, and just seven interceptions.
