Mariano Rivera May Retire After 2012 Season

Legendary New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera may retire after the 2012 season, according to the New York Post.

“I don’t know what will happen,’’ Rivera told the Post “I have one year left. I might call it over. I will know more in spring training.’’

Rivera, 42, may be forced to undergo surgery on his vocal cords this offseason. Rivera reportedly has suffered pain when attempting to speak over the past month and will meet with a doctor Monday to determine the severity of his condition. The Post reports that Rivera may need to undergo a vocal cord scraping, which could have a recovery time of 3-6 weeks.

The all-time saves leader has played 17 years for the New York Yankees, and has served as their closer for the past 15. During his tenure he has helped the team win five World Series trophies, led the league in saves three times, and has finished in the top-five in the American League Cy Young award voting five times.
