Until now the Tigers had not been considered a candidate in the Fielder sweepstakes. It was previously believed that the top remaining teams in the race for the All-Star first baseman’s services were the Washington Nationals, Texas Rangers, and Seattle Mariners.

The Tigers currently boast one of the best hitting first baseman in baseball, Miguel Cabrera, but have a vacancy at designated hitter after an ACL injury has forced Victor Martinez out for the entirety of 2011.
