Nationals Re-Sign Rick Ankiel To Minor-League Contract

Monday February 6th, 2012

The sports world is 99 percent shut down for tonight's Super Bowl showdown in Indianapolis, but here's one little news tidbit that trickled in just before kickoff -- the Washington Nationals have re-signed Rick Ankiel.

Ankiel made $1.5 million on a one-year contract for the Nats last season. He posted a subpar batting line of .239/.296/.363 as the team's regular center fielder, but the former pitcher was better known for his throwing arm, one of the best in the game. Ankiel, who broke into the majors as a starting pitcher for the Cardinals, has a career .246 average. He's been in the major leagues as a position player since 2007.
