Mike Aviles Named Red Sox Starting Shortstop

Mike Aviles has won the shortstop competition with the Boston Red Sox, according to MLB.com.

He had been competing with top prospect Jose Iglesias for the starting shortstop position, however the team announced today that Aviles will start the team’s season opener against the Detroit Tigers April 5. Iglesias, a defensive whiz, will be sent to Triple-A Pawtucket to work on his offensive game.

"It was [emotional] because we have tough decisions going on, but at the end of the day I can't control that," said Iglesias. "I'll get better, that's what I can control and that's what I will do."
