Report: Cubs' Carlos Marmol In Danger Of Losing Closer Job

Carlos Marmol is in danger of losing his job as closer of the Chicago Cubs, according to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times.

"There’s definitely a thought of it now," Cubs manager Dale Sveum admitted after the Cubs lost to the Cincinnati Reds today, 4-3 in 10 innings. "I can’t lie to you."

Marmol blew a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the ninth today -- he walked the first two batters of the inning before an error and a single plated a run. After Marmol issued a third walk, Sveum yanked him mid-inning for Rafael Dolis.

Marmol now leads the Cubs in walks with 12. He has an ERA of 6.23 in 8.2 innings pitched, and he has more blown saves (three) than completed ones (two).

"You've got to be able to throw strikes if you’re closing," Sveum said.
