The 35-year-old Dempster is 5-3 with a 1.86 ERA this season and hasn't allowed a run in his last 33 innings on the mound. He is a free agent after the season. Dempster is one of the top players expected to be available at the trade deadline, and Chicago is believed to have many teams interested.

The Cubs are reportedly looking to trade multiple players by the deadline as new president of baseball operations Theo Epstein tries to rebuild the team. Starting pitchers Matt Garza and Paul Maholm could also be traded. Outfielders Bryan LaHair, an All-Star this season, and Alfonso Soriano are also among the other players who could be moved. Chicago is 36-52 this season and looking for prospects.
