Clemson AD Terry Don Phillips expected to announce retirement on Thursday

Publish date:

In a move that is not unexpected since he said last month that he would not seek a contract extension, Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips is expected to announce his retirement on Thursday, sources tell Travis Sawchik of the Charleston Post & Courier.

Phillips' contract runs through June 30, 2013, but it is unclear if he will stay in his post for that long.

In 2012, Clemson enjoyed its most successful football season in two decades under coach Dabo Swinney, who has the strong support of Phillips. But fans were calling for the heads of both Phillips and Swinney following the 2011 season, and only the hiring of offensive coordinator Chad Morris quieted the fervor.

Phillips, Sawchik writes, already had been criticized for sticking with previous coach Tommy Bowden for too long before making a change in October 2008.
