Yunel Escobar suspended three games for homophobic eye black

The Toronto Blue Jays announced in a press conference today that shortstop Yunel Escobar has been suspended for three games by the team. Escobar has been in hot water with the Blue Jays, Major League Baseball, and fans after he was spotted wearing eye black with a homophobic slang term written on top.

Yahoo! Sports has an explanation of what the slur means in Spanish, and roughly what it translates into in English.

The Blue Jays also announced that Escobar's forfeited salary from his suspension will be donated to their Jays to You Can Play charity and the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).

The National Post's Bruce Arthur has tweeted quotes from Escobar at the press conference, apologizing for and explaining the message on his eye black.
