David Ortiz notches two hits in sim game, could start full rehab on Thursday

Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz went 2 for 4 during a simulated game in Fort Myers, Fla., on Monday and could begin a rehab assignment in Triple-A Pawtucket on Thursday, reports MassLive.com's Evan Drellich.

The 37-year-old is recovering from a inflammation in his right heel -- officially "right heel tendinopathy," according to the report -- that arose during spring training and forced him to start the season on the disabled list.

A strained Achilles on the same leg limited Ortiz to 90 games last season.

He estimated that he could require 25-30 minor-league at-bats before being ready to return -- a timetable that would bring him back to the Red Sox on April 17 or 18, according to The Boston Globe's Peter Abraham.

Farrell said Ortiz ran the bases well. Triple-A Pawtucket is home eight straight games starting Thursday, from April 11-18. Farrell has previously said Ortiz would likely rehab with Pawtucket.

"We’re hopeful (for) three days of action in Fort Myers before he would go out from there, provided there are no setbacks," Farrell said.
