The NHL fined Islanders forward Frans Nielsen $5,000 on Wednesday for slashing Coyotes forward Martin Hanzal on Tuesday night, the league announced.

Nielsen was assessed a minor penalty for his two-handed slash after Hanzal cross-checked him into the boards in the third period of the Islanders' 6-1 win.

Coyotes wing Mikkel Boedker received two minutes for roughing after tackling Nielsen from behind following the slash. Boedker said he was protecting his teammate and would do it again.
