Steve Downie taken to hospital after fight, others hurt in brawl

Steve Downie was taken to the hospital after sustaining injuries in a second period fight in his Flyers debut, according to Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News.

Downie instigated the fight with Capitals left wing Aaron Volpatti after the Flyers fell behind 5-0 in the second period. After the game, Philadelphia GM Paul Holmgren said Downie had suffered a concussion and was taken to the hospital.

Holmgren also said Flyers center Vincent Lecavalier will miss time with facial injuries sustained in a line brawl which started after the Capitals extended their lead to 7-0. The brawl led to more than a hundred penalty minutes being handed out and even saw Philly goaltender Ray Emery drop gloves against Caps goalie Braden Holtby.
