West Ham defender James Tomkins charged with assaulting an officer

James Tomkins was charged with assaulting an officer outside a nightclub early Sunday morning, police said.
The 24-year-old was arrested at a club in Essex County, east of London.
"Officers arrived and arrested James Tomkins before charging him with one count of assaulting a police officer, one count of resisting arrest and one count of being drunk and disorderly in a public place," police said.

Tomkins, who was a member of Great Britain's Olympic team in 2012, was released on bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 9.
