The Dallas Mavericks are interested in adding free-agent big man Pau Gasol and plan to be one of the teams to pursue him,’s Tim McMahon and Marc Stein reported Sunday.

According to the report, the chances the Mavericks add Gasol depends on whether he’ll be available at an affordable price. Gasol made more than $19 million with the Los Angeles Lakers last season, but he’ll likely face a significant pay cut in free agency.

The Mavericks will have about $30 million in cap room this offseason — some of which will go toward re-signing star forward Dirk Nowitzki. Adding the soon-to-be 34-year-old Gasol would provide Dallas’ offense with another potent weapon. Dallas is also interested in adding Washington Wizards center Marcin Gortat — but, according to the report, they believe they will be “priced out” of that option.

The Mavericks are also expected to be players for free agent Carmelo Anthony, which would preclude them from signing Gasol or Gortat. The Houston Rockets and Chicago Bulls are viewed as more likely to sign Anthony, as are the New York Knicks to re-sign their star player.

Gasol averaged 17.4 points, 9.7 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 60 games with the Lakers last season.
