Real Madrid is set to make a significant offer to sign AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso, according to reports in Italy.

Gattuso has had a very disappointing season for the Rossoneri, and has looked a shadow of his former terrier-like self.

The Italian press on Monday reported that Milan was looking to begin a new era at the club by offloading the hard man.

This has alerted Real Madrid, which is ready to make a $32 million bid for the player, a significant fee for someone who recently turned 30.

The Spanish giants are looking for a new defensive dirty-man, as they are almost certain to sell Mahamadou Diarra in the summer, with the Malian likely to end up at Inter Milan.

There are also reports that former Milan midfielder Massimo Donati, now at Celtic, has told the Rossoneri that he would be willing to rejoin them.

The 27-year-old left San Siro for Glasgow last summer in a $6 million deal, however there has been speculation that he is homesick and wants to return to his home country.
