Standard to offer U.S. int'l Onyewu new deal
According to reports out of Belgium, U.S. international Oguchi Onyewu's club team, Standard Liege, is ready to extend his contract and has an offer ready for the 26-year-old defender.
It remains to be seen whether Onyewu will accept the offer, given his aspirations for a bigger league and stronger competition, but the good will is there and regardless of what Onyewu decides, his time at Liege was valued by the club.
"We will make him a new proposal. It is then up to him to decide what he wants," said technical director Dominique D'Onofrio in an interview with La Meuse. "We would be able to understand [if Onyewu chooses to leave]. If he does not, then we go out together as best friends."
Since joining Standard in 2004, Onyewu has made 139 appearances and is currently a staple in their starting line-up. He's also a first choice of U.S. head coach Bob Bradley, having won 38 caps for the U.S. since 2004.
